Hi Barry,

In my somewhat similar context and in the great-natured spirit of the advice I’ve been given here, I refer you to a response from Ron (hope he won’t mind):

Most Newton users will use a serial cable and the appropriate connection utility. This is probably the easiest method and only requires the purchase of a compatible serial cable.

Some other non-conventional methods that you might also consider:

A) The download and "Put Away" method. This is how I do most of the installs on my Newton. A Newton can connect to, view folders on, and download files from, just about any web server. You can also use email to send .pkg files to yourself, as attachments. However, this method requires that your Newton has already gone through the complex setup process to become a wired or wireless NIE enabled device.

B) The Lender Card method. In the past, I created Lender Cards and mailed them out. Unfortunately, I no longer have any spare Linear Flash Cards in my collection. If you have a spare Flash Card, you could mail it to me (or another user) and the update could be mailed back to you, I ready to "Put Away" from the InBox.

C) The Beaming Circle method. Kind of like a sewing circle only you're trading updates instead of stitches. Schedule a meet up with other Newton users and then one user can beam the update, from their OutBox to your InBox, from one Newton user to another. And then, can you imagine, those two users can beam the update to two more Newton users. And so on, and so on, exponentially. Until the whole world is updated.

Ron

And the good Doctor Clu provided a link (hope he won’t mind me passing on his ‘prescription’):

https://40hz.org/Pages/newton/patches/patch712000/

There was a time when I was tinkering away, installing packages and even writing resource books on a 2000 with keyboard (a story that might bore most people…) and this was one website among many that was helpful:

http://applenewton.co.uk/2019/04/30/best-usb-to-rs232-cable-for-ncx-and-newtons/

Hmm…now that I’ve been forced to ‘rescue’ my Newts, I think that Green Glow is starting to come over me once again!
