So beware of using "big" ATA cards with Paul's driver.
Paul's driver works well but you have to keep in mind that it can't go beyond the limits of the Newton. 
The use of large capacity cards (larger than the usual Newton Flash cards of 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 20, 32 Mb) requires a partitioning in several partitions so that there are not too many files in each partition, otherwise it will saturate the usable memory of the Newton, never forget that each file in memory is always managed by the system. On Newton all accessible files are not really inert. 
Therefore it is common to make partitions of 4, 8... up to 32 Mb, beyond that the system will start to be slowed down by the management of all files in the same partition, and I can tell you that a slow Newton is very annoying ! 
On 256Mb cards, there are already 8 partitions of 32Mb, 16 of 16Mb, 32 of 8Mb and so on. It becomes quickly complicated to manage because you have to switch from one partition to another to access files on another partition with the ATA driver.
