It might be crashing because it can't find a serial port. Try connecting a serial-to-USB adapter for which you have an extension installed. Newton Connection (a.k.a. Newton Connection Kit) is only for OS 1.x devices though; you need Newton Connection _Utilities_ for OS 2.x.
