[NTLK] Admission / Adding battery tray to eMate

So thank you Doug our phone conversation was a good step by step in 
figuring out if the battery tray was working on the eMate.  The answer 
after we tried it in another eMate is yes, it is working fine.   So here 
is what we found out:

The 1.5v rechargable batteries work fine with the second eMate allowing 
it to power up fine when you open the lid or use the power button on the 
keyboard.

On the first eMate I tried, the eMate would power on but only when the 
power was first added or the bottonside reset button was hit.  So here 
is the question:

Why would the power button on the keyboard, or the lid power button, not 
work when the rest of the keyboard is working AND the power button works 
for powering down the Newton?

A capasitor going out?
