[NTLK] How to remove a stubborn Newton 2100 battery?

Hi Newtonians,

I just received a package with a bunch of Newton stuff, including a lovely 2100. I’m eager to see if it works, but I’ve run into a snag: I can’t get the battery out! The bundle included a AA-battery holder in the box, so presumably the battery inside the unit is the original rechargeable pack. I’ve fiddled with it, made sure the release tab is being pressed fully, tried gently prying it with a fingernail, etc., but I’m getting nowhere.

Are these batteries known to swell with age? The outer case of the Newton itself is a bit sticky with age (as are my other Newtons) - might this just be a sticky battery case? Given the age and probable brittleness of the plastics involved I’d prefer to not have to remove screws and take the system apart...

Grateful for any tips!
