Do you have all three of the driver extensions installed?

* Farallon PN895 driver (required for all supported 3Com cards)
* Patch to support 3Com 3c589, 3c589B, 3c589C, and 3c589D cards
* Patch to support 3Com 3CXE589DT, 3CXE589ET, and 3CXE589EC cards

I was just testing a 3Com 3c589DT card (not specifically listed amongst the cards above) this weekend. I ran into the same error as you reported until I made sure I had both 3Com support patches installed.
