This is a great idea. Maybe you can use standard AAA cells in the AA carrier and then use the additional space for the charging electronics? That wy, you still have the correct voltage available.
Also, 14500 cells have 3.7V and the same diameter as AA cells, but are 5mm shorter, again making room for the electronics.
