I can fit 2x 14500 cells from Nitecore like these:

I have to reduce the number from 4 to 2 in order to fit the charging and
regulation into it.  But 2000 mah seems pretty respectable for the gain of
the charging circuit and ability to USBC charge the newton.

Does anyone know if the two bottom tabs (thermistor) in a regular
rechargeable newton pack do not exist the newton wont try to charge
the battery?

Still kinda in the crazy ideas phase and trying to wrap my head around the
best route to do this while maintaining safety and not letting the blue
smoke out of a perfectly working newton.
