I have used an OS 1.x-formatted flash card in an eMate. It was the kind  
that the eMate can't write to because of hardware limitations, but  
otherwise it worked.

On a writable card, I think OS 2.x will require you to update the format  
before the card can be written to, but it might also let you just read it  
without updating.
