I recall that Frank (Gruendel) has seen and repaired this problem. IIRC it involves disassembly and swapping internal chips/boards—best left to someone like him to undertake.

Frank’s site is  https://www.pda-soft.de/. Once there you’ll be asked to select your language: English or German. I looked through the options under Hardware and also under FAQs, and I didn’t see this particular repair.
