My understanding of the MailV patch is it only support fetching over TLS, not sending, and SMTP requires that these days; https://github.com/pguyot/mbedtls-NewtonOS/issues/3

I'm thinking of spending $5/year at Newton City - are people still doing that, and does it work with Mail V well ?

Mail V seems to be the best (last ?) of the mail clients to still be working.
