With AI, knowing that it takes a week to rewrite NewtonOS pretty much from scratch, the best way forward IMHO - this is very much open for discussion - would be a native NewtonOS (a NewtonOS implementation that runs as if it was specifically made for you Mac, PC, iPhone, Android, whatever, not emulated), whil giving all the interfaces that makes Einstein so convenient.

I think about a few different paths:

A NewtonOS 3.0 and later, for new hardware and with added features and capabilities. Colour in the UI? Support for larger screens with windowing? A modern web browser? PDF? MP4? Expanded Newton Intelligence?

A NewtonOS 2.2 (and maybe 1.4) for original green hardware, fixing bugs, integrating date patches, ATA card support, Bluetooth, maybe accommodating some modern protocols?

Newton applications running seamlessly on Windows, Android, and all of Apple’s xOS variants.

I expect it will be easy for our community to fragment: Claude could make everyone a custom platform! The idea of an app or a feature is now more or less enough to make it: the collective user base could easily dissipate if we lose our common experience.

I always hoped for the NewtonOS source code. I didn’t anticipate it would come along with source code becoming mostly obsolete.
