The story goes like this ...

About a year ago, I spotted something on Steve Weyer’s NewtVNC page that I though might make a good addition to the Newton Glossary.

https://communicrossings.com/html/newton/vnc.htm

At the bottom of the page, under the heading of “Current Issues/Plans” was this line:

* faster communication transfers (eventually) via NIL (Newton Interface Library) [encourage Paul]

I emailed Steve asking what NIL was ... and if the “Paul” needing encouragement was indeed Paul Guyot.

(... of course it was Paul.)

Steve sent me a copy of the source code that he dug out of his old backups. After peeking through the documentation, I discovered that NIL actually stood for “Newton Internet Library”.

This week, I finally got around to adding all three terms to the glossary.

https://newtonglossary.com/terms/newton-internet-library
https://newtonglossary.com/terms/newton-interface-library
https://newtonglossary.com/terms/nil-library

I also contacted Paul to ask I could upload the source code to UNNA, along with some additional C++ code called “VNC Native” that he wrote for NewtVNC package..

( ... of course, Paul agreed.)

Everything is currently sitting in the UNNA incoming queue:

http://www.unna.org/incoming/NIL.sit
http://www.unna.org/incoming/NIL.zip
http://www.unna.org/incoming/VNCNative.sit
http://www.unna.org/incoming/VNCNative.zip

A copy of the NIL source (and the documentation included in the source archive) is also on the Newted server.

Enjoy.
