Thanks! I thought later Newton versions showed an animation or message when the battery pack was charging. Apparently not, at least for the 120 and 130.
This means there’s no way to tell if the pack is actually charging. When you plug in the power supply, the onscreen label changes from “battery” to “adapter,” but that happens whether you use standard batteries or the battery pack.
I’m also surprised the handbook barely mentions recharging. If the device won't tell you when it's fully charged, the manual should at least say how long to leave it plugged in.
I assume the OMP handbook is similar to the 120/130 one, but it would still be nice to have a digital copy of it.

I have never been able to locate a PDF version of the original MessagePad Handbook.
However, I might have an extra copy kicking around here somewhere ... let me check.
There are copies of the 1995 handbook (MP120 with Newton OS 2.0) and 1996 handbook (MP130) on the Newted site. These obviously use different rechargeable battery packs, but I imagine that the charging circuitry is similar.
