Hi NewtonTalk folks!

I could use some help with a simple(?) task I'd love to accomplish:

I have two Newton devices, a Newton 2100 and an eMate 300. They can both sync to an era-appropriate Mac (a Performa 575 which has been upgraded in various ways, including Ethernet so it's on my home network).

I would like to display a simple 2-color logo on the screen of either / both Newton devices - this logo exists on the Performa in a few formats (JPG, pict, GIF, etc. - conversions to various formats are easy). I'm just not sure what I need to do to make this happen - someone on Twitter suggested that I'd need to embed the image in a "Newton Book" but they didn't reply to inquiries about how such a book would be created, and of course "newton book" is a search term that returns a LOT of totally-unrelated content, so I haven't made much progress.

Thanks for any guidance or suggestions here - I'd really love to pull this off and just don't know what the steps will be!

Huxley

Although this isn't the first time I've read an article about handwriting being better for retention than typed notetaking (which I agree with), it _is_ the first time I've seen one that says pen & paper beats stylus & tablet.

Their observation that this may be because each digital "page" occupies the same physical space as the previous (or worse, that digital pages can be infinitely long) is quite interesting to me.

Are flash cards compatible as is between an OMP and an eMate ?

Hi Chris,

Unfortunately, if your card is formatted on OMP you can?t use it on eMate. eMat will tell you that the card was used with old Newton.

UPDATE:

I think I need to be more precise. So:

Card from NOS 1.x can be read-only on NOS 2.x or CAN be converted for NOS 2.x
Card from NOS 2.x or converted on NOS 2.x CAN?T be read on NOS 1.x and CAN?t be converted back to NOS 1.x

I constantly write notes, make drawings, create lists etc, right now on single sheets of lined paper attached to a clipboard. Until recently I used my Newton, but presently it has been diverted to helping set up the eMate I just purchased.

Oftentimes I will delegate the documentation of projects to either paper or the Newton?i.e. I will choose the Newton to make notes for one task, but for another use paper and ink.

Forrest

I also regularly use paper and pen for making writing notes. Usually it resembles something more like chicken scratchings than writing. But I have a note book permanently open next to my computer.

I certainly wont be writing any novels soon..

Me too. I?m using a paper Moleskin ?tablet? notebook with a smart pen captures your pen strokes and connects to their iPad app to regurgitate my scrawl on the screen. Anything legible enough is searchable in the app so it?s a handy way to have the aforementioned benefits of pen and paper writing but with digital search (and editing).

Cheers
Nic

Hello Newton Friends,

I am looking for some guidance getting my Newton connected to my home network.

On my MessagePad 2000, I have been able to install Newton Internet Enabler (NIE) 2.0 and the ATLAN v8 Ethernet drivers for my D-Link DE-660 PC Card.? Now, when I insert the PC Card, I get a slip that lets me know that the card 660+ has been inserted.? When I attach the RJ-45/BNC combo dongle and plug-in an Ethernet cable, I don?t get any status lights on the dongle.? The card and dongle were purchased together from a seller on eBay so I do not know for sure that the card and dongle are good.

I know that the jack and Ethernet cable are good because when I plug a MacBook Pro in, it pulls a DHCP address.? I no longer have a PC notebook with a PCMCIA card slot on it to test the card with Windows.

Does anyone know if there is a test or ping utility that I can use to test the card?? I am not 100% sure that I have configured the Newton correctly in Internet Setup.? I have created a Generic Setup as follows:

Title: Ethernet Setup

Configuration: DHCP Server

Card: D-Link DE-660

Domain Name: gns.net

I was thinking that I wanted to test and verify network connectivity before moving on to an email client or web browser.

Any ideas and suggestions are appreciated.

Cheers,

Alan

Alan,

You need to see if your router recognizes your card and assigns it an address. If the light of the card does not light up, it means that the card is not connected, or at worst that it does not work.
But installing NIE is not enough! For the connection to be effective, the Newton must ask, through a program (such as NewtScape, MailV, or any other service that needs to be connected) for the connection to be opened (and thus the card activated).

To summarize, on Newton, the connection must be requested by a program for the connection to be opened and the card activated... NIE just lets you know what to do when such a request is made.

To Sylvain's point, I don't think the lights on the card would be expected
until you actually try to "connect". Try downloading Newt's Cape (
http://www.unna.org/unnasearch/entry.php?pkey=139) and then opening any
page. You don't need to let it load, but when it tries to load, you should
get obvious signs of life with the card's lights and you should see Newt's
Cape start to "GET" data. If the lights blink in sequence and then turn
off there is likely a software/settings issue with the connection.

To that last point, you might want to experiment with removing that domain
name. If none of that works, although I assume you got them from here,
some Atlan drivers are also here (
http://www.unna.org/unnasearch/entry.php?pkey=202).
