I remember that day well. We were developing a medical device called the WalkAide and we used Newton 2100s as configuration devices, talking to the WalkAide using the IR port.

When we heard that the Newton had been killed, after we developed pouches, plastic parts to connect optical fibre to the IR port, and tons of software, we got together in a meeting room to figure out what to do. “Well, it’s time to bend over and switch to Windows CE”.

Yeah, that didn’t go nearly as well as we hoped. We tested Casio, NEC, and HP hand helds. You couldn’t have an app completely take over the screen, the user could always bring up the start menu and play solitaire, on a medical device. The battery life S-U-C-K-E-D, and then you would loose all of your apps and data, about twice a day. Then each model would be obsoleted before we could finish testing. And the windows developers conference is the polar opposite of the Apple WWDC, I have never seen so many glasses pushing bad suits in one place, it pretty much explained why windows is so hostile to users, the developers aren’t fully functioning humans.
