My understanding is that the MP120s were originally produced with NOS 1.3, and later batches were produced with NOS 2.0. The NOS is on a ROM chip within the Newton. Apple did have a program where one could send in their MP120 with NOS 1.3 and get it upgraded to NOS 2.0. If you have a MP120 running NOS 1.3, then you are limited to the 12V card. If you have a MP120 running NOS 2.0, then you could use the 12v, 5v and 3v cards. You can tell if you're running NOS 1.3 by looking on the bottom line of the 'Prefs' utility in 'Extras'. I remember seeing something to confirm if you're running NOS 2.0 and that it's in a similar place but can't remember where it is off hand.
As to the specific coding in the NOS that allows the use of the other two voltage cards, I haven't a clue.

How is this OS-specific? You might be referring to the two "worlds" of Newton hardware, but remember the MP120 can run both 1.3 and 2.0, so is it limited to 12V or not?
